A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the family of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, as the devastating floods in Texas claimed the life of a young family member over the weekend.
Nine-year-old Janie Hunt, a beloved cousin in the Hunt family, was among the victims of the catastrophic flooding that swept through parts of the Texas Hill Country. Janie had been attending Camp Mystic in Wimberley, her first time at the all-girls summer camp, when the Guadalupe River surged from days of relentless rain.
Janie was the great-granddaughter of William Herbert Hunt, a Texas oil billionaire and brother to Lamar Hunt, the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs and Clark Hunt’s father.
In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Clark Hunt’s wife, Tavia Hunt, expressed her profound grief and spiritual struggle in the wake of the loss.

“Our hearts are shattered by the destruction caused by the flooding in Wimberley and the unimaginable loss of precious lives — including our sweet little cousin Janie, and the daughters of several dear friends,” Tavia wrote. “How do we continue to trust in a God who is said to be good and sovereign, yet allows such tragedy — especially when it affects children?”
Tavia’s reflection echoes the pain felt by many in the community and across the country as the death toll from the flooding continues to climb. As of the latest reports, at least 70 people have died due to the floods, with more still unaccounted for. Among the deceased are five young campers and the director of Camp Mystic. At least 11 individuals remain missing.
Camp Mystic, a long-standing institution in the area, was unprepared for the magnitude of the flooding that overwhelmed the region after several inches of rain drenched the Texas Hill Country, causing the Guadalupe River to overflow its banks.
The tragic event has left many families grieving and communities in mourning. As the Hunt family navigates this period of deep sorrow, Tavia offered a message of hope and faith for others who may be struggling to understand such loss.
“If you are grieving today, please know this — God is close to the brokenhearted,” she wrote. “He treats your wounds with tenderness. He remains faithful, even when your heart wrestles with doubt. Trust doesn’t mean the pain disappears — it means you place it in the hands of the One who can carry it with love and begin the healing.”

As search and recovery efforts continue in the flood-affected areas, communities are rallying together to support the families impacted by this calamity — a somber reminder of how quickly joy can turn to heartbreak.
