LEWISTON, Wis. — A disturbing case of animal neglect in Columbia County has led to the euthanization of three horses and the rescue of more than a dozen others, following an investigation at a rural Lewiston property.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reports that the investigation began on June 27 after deputies received a tip about suspected animal mistreatment. A deputy with specialized training in animal welfare accompanied investigators to the scene, where they were met by the property owner.
As detectives and the deputy surveyed the area, several horses were spotted in visibly poor health, prompting the team to obtain a search warrant for a more thorough inspection. With help from veterinary professionals, 21 horses were examined. Three of the animals were found to be in such critical condition that they were humanely euthanized on-site.
The remaining 18 horses were rescued and transported to various equine rehabilitation centers across southern Wisconsin, where they are now receiving appropriate care and medical treatment.
